Solan was on way to Shimla from Kalka.
We went to Solan.
We stayed in Solan.
There were independent bungalows.
There were many houses of big seths from big cities like Calcutta and Mumbai.
They would come for summers.
There was a garden on top of a hill or tibba.
Surrounding Solan were hills and valleys and a bigger mountain.
Amongst the good English public schools was the St.Lukes School earlier called the Epiphany school.
It was a coed school.
The principal was from Kerala and so were the brothers and father.
Many teachers were from Kerala.
It had a boarding also.
Dayscholars were also allowed.
There was an army cantonment.
There were churches on the hill.
There were a few grounds and in some of them there used to be fairs and wrestling.
We saw Dara Singh and Tiger Joginder Singh.
There were pine trees.and trees of various fruits like apple,pear,apricot,plums etc.
There were nice walks in the hills and valleys,picnic spots,streams and waterfalls.
Climate was good and healthy.
There were small markets.
There was a small bus stand with hotels and a nice little railway station.
One could occasionally see various film stars going past or taking something in the hotels or buying something from the roadside stalls.
The agriculture department had a farm near Kandaghat.
There was a Mycology and Plant pathology laboratory established by the Asstt. Plant pathologist to HP government Shri S.S.Jain and he later grew edible mushrooms in this lab. for the first time in India .
There was the Himachal Agricultural University started by Shri S.S.Jain,later shifted to Palampur.
Nearby was the Solan brewery also called the Mohan Meakin brewery.
Nearby were other places of interest like Chail,Dagshai and Kasauli etc.
It did not snow in Solan normally but once we saw snow which did allow us to make a snowman and make icecream by putting boiled sweetened milk in a container in the belly of the snowman.
Solan was a nice experience then but now it is very much colonised.
