Father had got a higher level post as a Scientist and he had left the post at Solan and moved out from Himachal Pradesh and joined in the Research Institute in Cuttack, Orissa, India.
We had gone to his father's place and my mother's place in Western Uttar Pradesh to meet the relatives before moving out toCuttack.
One day about forty three years ago we boarded a train from Delhi Station bound for Orissa.
It was a long train journey to Orissafrom Delhi through Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and finally Orissa.
After sometime the home cooked food finished.
We had woken up to find the landscape of West Bengal dotted with small ponds or pukurs.
As the train moved along we came across the somewhat barren landscape of Orissa.
We were beginning to feel hungry and waited for the stations to come.
Stations came and went past.
There wasnothing to eat.
Then at one station someone in dirty clothes came along with a basket and crying
" sing,sing,sing ".
We did not know what " sing " meant.
We called him and found he was selling ground nuts.
We bought a kilogram of the " sing ".
We were still hungry and passed by Balasore.
Nothing.
Then came Bhadrak station.
It had a roof, a station master's room,a waiting room, lightsand there was some activity.
We were looking out for food.
Nothing.
As the train slowed down we saw a few vendors selling something.
Father went down and soon came back with whatever he could get.
It was the first time we tasted the Oriya sweets called " chhannagaza " and " lavang lasa ".
Lavang lasa had a lavang or clove inserted in to the sweet.
Since we were ravenously hungry we devoured the same and liked the taste and asked for more.
It is difficult to forget those Oriya sweets till this day even when we left Orissa long back after my father retired and moved back to his home state Uttar Pradesh and I moved out for study and service.
